What Is Decomposed Granite?
Decomposed granite (DG) is formed from the natural weathering of granite bedrock into a granular, sandy material. It's available in natural gold, brown, and grey tones, and compacts firmly while retaining a natural appearance.
Unlike gravel, DG stabilizes when compacted — it won't roll underfoot or scatter easily. Unlike concrete, it drains freely and can be re-graded if needed. That balance makes it popular for a wide range of outdoor applications.
1. Garden Pathways
DG is one of the best pathway materials available at this price point. A 2–3 inch layer compacted over a weed barrier creates a firm, comfortable walking surface that sheds water and resists erosion.
It pairs well with stepping stones, timber edging, and ornamental grasses. The natural earth tones complement most planting schemes without competing for attention.
2. Xeriscape and Drought-Tolerant Gardens
In water-conscious landscaping, DG replaces lawn or mulch as a ground cover. It suppresses weeds, retains some moisture around plant roots, and — unlike organic mulch — doesn't decompose or require annual replacement.
It's particularly effective in the planting beds of native plant gardens, where the natural, mineral aesthetic matches the character of the plants.
3. Patio Surfaces
For a casual outdoor seating area, stabilized DG makes a cost-effective patio surface. Compacted to 4 inches and edged with steel or stone, it's stable enough for outdoor furniture and foot traffic.
It drains in heavy rain rather than puddling, which is an advantage over concrete or pavers in areas with poor natural drainage.
4. Horse Arenas and Paddocks
DG is widely used in equestrian facilities as an arena footing and paddock surface. It provides firm, level ground that drains well and doesn't become slippery under hoof traffic.
Its natural composition means it's safe if horses ingest trace amounts during grazing, which can't be said for synthetic or chemically-treated alternatives.
5. Decorative Mulch Around Trees and Shrubs
Used as a mulch layer, DG suppresses weeds, moderates soil temperature, and keeps a tidy appearance throughout the year. Apply 2–3 inches over weed fabric around the base of trees and shrubs.
Unlike wood chip mulch, DG won't host fungal growth, attract termites, or blow away in wind. It stays where you put it.
